What is a copywriter?

The simple definition of "copywriter" is someone who writes copy.

Specifically, a copywriter is a type of writer who writes advertising and marketing materials, such as print ads, direct mail, radio advertisements, TV spots, brochures, and web pages.

The primary difference between a copywriter and other types of writers is that a copywriter must write copy that motivates, persuades, and sells. Good writing or a clever style are not enough. In the advertising industry it is said that if it doesn't sell, it's not creative.

You might think of a copywriter as a sales person who uses words to make sales.
