Copywriter salaries and fees

Asking how much copywriters make is like asking how tall trees are. There is considerable variation.

For full-time copywriters working for ad agencies or corporations, a typical salary can range from $25,000 to $100,000 a year. Copywriters who rise to management, such as an agency creative director, can make $200,000 or more.

Variation among freelancers is even greater. There are novice or part-time freelancers who make $5,000 to $10,000 a year. There are full-time professionals who make $100,000 to $300,000 a year or more. And there are superstars or entrepreneurs who combine copywriting with other business ventures and can make $500,000 to $1 million or more a year.

Here are some ballpark fee ranges for typical "professional-level" freelance copywriting projects. Note: This is NOT my personal fee schedule.

Blog Post - $250-$500 per post
Brochure (small) - $500-$1,500+
Brochure (large) - $500-$1,000 per page
Direct Mail Package - $2,500-$15,000+
Direct Mail Commission - 1-3 cents per piece mailed
Email (short) - $250-$750
Email (long) - $750-$1,500+
News Release - $500-$1,500
Online Sales Page - $1,500-$5,000+
Print Ad - $1,500-$5,000+
Radio Ad - $1,000-$2,000
Speech - $2,500-$5,000
TV Commercial - $2,500-$4,000
Video Script - $100-$500 per minute
Web Banner - $250-$750
Website - $500-$750 per page
White Paper - $500-$750 per page
